“The Love Shack” is a unique little traditional West Indian dwelling, tucked away amongst the trees, high on a hill with a millionaire’s view of Falmouth Harbour. It was built with hand tools by the owners thirty years ago as a place to live whilst they built their dream home “Windy Ridge” at the other end of the same property. Since then it has been enjoyed by countless guests looking for a quiet place to stay and unwind. Surfers, weary yacht crew, New York photographers, artists, teachers and honeymooners are among the people that have returned to “The Love Shack” time and time again over the years.
This Tiny Home was designed cleverly by sailors with careful thought given to the best use of space. One approaches down a winding woodland path and enters onto an outdoor dining porch that can seat 6 at the table. A clear blind can be rolled down to provide protection from the wind and passing showers. There is a traditional West Indian coal pot on which to grill your supper. Or alternatively enjoy some hammock time or a massage “al fresco” from one of our many talented local massage therapists.
Entering the prettily decorated, one room cottage you will find a queen size bed built up high to enable you to enjoy a grand view of the harbour from the bed through the full width windows. The climb is made easy with the aid of an American folk art whale stool and the bed is swathed in a romantic mosquito net which can be drawn back by day. There is ample storage room under the bed and in many drawers.
There is a neat, well laid out galley kitchen with two burner stove, a toaster oven and under-counter fridge. Across the room is an L shaped sitting area with a corner table. There is Wifi, solar powered lighting, hot and cold running water and 110v power outlets.
Entering through the back door one finds one-self in an enchanting bathroom set in a private rock garden. Take a shower under the stars serenaded by tree frogs and twinkling fireflies. Its a truly magical experience and one of the unique benefits of a Caribbean lifestyle!
Due to the steepness of the property, The Love Shack is completely private. Surrounded by trees and flowering shrubs one could be in the wilderness or a remote lighthouse even though there are other houses not that far away and one is only a 10 minute drive from the village and 15 minutes from a major international yachting centre! The property is fenced with an electric gate and there is ample parking.
Watch the pelicans and frigate birds perform their ariel acrobatics, feed the little Banana Quits sugar in the palm of Buddha and just listen to the sound of the wind and the surf breaking below on Turtle Bay. This little beach is great for exploring in the rock pools or you can pack a picnic and hike along the coast to our beloved, unspoilt sweep of fine white sand and turquoise water known as Rendezvous Bay. Enjoy a magnificent view of local yacht races or join the Yacht Club or sailing school and join in the fun yourself.
There are many great hikes nearby in The National Park and guided tours available for those interested in learning about the local flora and fauna. The Spring Hill Riding School is just a few minutes away for scenic trail rides over hills to the seashore. In nearby Falmouth village there are several excellent restaurants and supermarkets and on the other side of the bay is English Harbour with its varied collection of marinas, shops, bars, dive shops and restaurants. Enjoy a delicious coffee on the waterfront and take in the bustling Superyacht scene during the peak yachting season or enjoy a game of tennis or squash at Temo Sports.
Your stay would not be complete of course without a day exploring the magnificently restored Cultural Heritage Site of Nelson’s Dockyard. Home of the British fleet for nearly 200 years from 1707 and named for Admiral Nelson who used it as his base, the place is steeped in history. Visit the museum and the many renovated buildings, gaze on the modern yachts now docked there and ponder on how the lives of the sailors have changed.
Island wide, of course there is much to explore but when you grow weary or the sun feels too high, its back to the little cottage on the hill for a cool siesta and some peace and tranquility.
